Experience the challenge, rigor and confidence that come with the DePauw-Ecuador Summer Program before the 2008-09 academic year begins. The program provides students with an intensive, five-week program (three weeks at DePauw and two weeks in Ecuador) in Spanish language immersion, cultural awareness and international service.
Due to the growing and changing global community and the importance of dealing effectively in multi-national environments for education, culture, commerce, communication and diplomacy, the DePauw-Ecuador Summer 2008 Program provides the basis for crosscultural understanding and communication through academic work and service. Spending time abroad is an excellent way for students to use their Spanish skills, and to gain context to better understand other cultures as well as their own. Students will be better prepared for the academic demands of DePauw, and to use their knowledge to more deeply engage in their home communities, Greencastle and abroad.
The DePauw-Ecuador Summer 2008 Program allows incoming students who have shown a commitment to service, leadership, intellectual development and cultural sensitivity to participate in a unique experience at DePauw and abroad. Students will be immersed in the rigors of DePauw academic life through intensive Spanish courses for three weeks on campus, preparing for two weeks in Quito, Ecuador.
On campus students will commit to a total immersion environment, guided by DePauw faculty members, recent DePauw graduates pursuing graduate studies in Spanish, and current DePauw Spanish majors – to improve their fluency and cultural understanding. In Quito, students will be actively involved with Spanish-speaking people as a way to put their knowledge into action through community service projects and further improve their language skills. The DePauw-Ecuador Summer 2008 program pushes students not only to rise to the academic challenges presented, but also to take their academic success beyond the classroom to benefit others.
