TBD summer 2010
For more detailed information, visit the program page.
Servicio en las Américas allows incoming students who are committed to civic responsibility, social justice, community awareness, responsible leadership, intellectual challenges, as well as the Spanish language and cultures, the opportunity to immerse themselves in a five-week intensive summer program on DePauw’s campus and in an international setting prior to the beginning of the academic year. Students will spend three weeks on campus improving their Spanish language skills, followed by two weeks in a Spanish-speaking country engaged in projects that will ultimately benefit local communities while building bridges of solidarity between those communities and DePauw. In addition to preparing for the academic demands of the DePauw experience, students will develop an intellectual understanding of the interconnectedness of communities on a local and global scale and broaden their sense of cultural diversity and responsibility as global citizens.
Expenses There is no cost to participate in Servicio en las Américas, thanks to a generous gift from alumnus Steve Trulaske and his wife, Michelle. While on the DePauw campus program participants will reside in University residence halls and meals will be complimentary. The international flight and all transportation associated with the program, on-site housing, and meals while abroad are also provided at no cost to the student.
Personal expenses, both on campus and abroad (including initial travel to the DePauw campus and your return home), are the responsibility of the student.
Servicio en las Américas is available to admitted first-year students who are committed to attending DePauw University. All applicants must have at least three years of high school Spanish. Preference will be given to students who are the first in their families to attend college and to those who have not yet traveled outside of the United States.
Applications are due by March 1. Applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee, and the participants will be chosen and notified by mid-March.
To apply, visit the Office of Admission website.
