Dan Lucero's SCAC Picks--Men's

Here's the SCAC Picks according to WGRE Sports Broadcaster, Dan Lucero.

Game 1 – Centre (East #1) vs Austin College (West # 4)

IN 2007-2008: Centre 68, Austin 62 @ Austin, January 18

Since an opening-night loss to Rust College, all the Centre Colonels have done is win. They’ve won big, they’ve won small. They’ve won with dramatic comebacks, and by staving off comebacks by other teams. They’ve won 23 consecutive games, a conference record, and they’re the first team ever to go through the men’s side of the SCAC with an unbeaten record. Those credentials aren’t too shabby. Compare that road to the SCAC Tournament with that of the Austin College Kangaroos, who needed to win a game and a coin flip on Sunday afternoon to make it to Conway. The young Roos have improved as the season has progressed, and sophomores Kola Alade and Chris Sturdivant are a potent 1-2 scoring punch. Austin gave Centre all they could handle in the only meeting between the two teams this season, but I don’t think Centre will have much trouble with the Roos the second time around, as their balance should overcome Austin’s two-man offensive attack.

THE PICK: Centre 78, Austin 60

Game 2 – Trinity (West #2) vs DePauw (East #3)

IN 2007-2008: DePauw 70, Trinity 68 @ Trinity, February 2

It’s always a struggle when the northern-most and southern-most Tiger teams in the SCAC lock horns, as it was when a furious second-half rally allowed DePauw to escape Sams Gymnasium with a two-point win earlier this season. The two point guards will be the story of this game. Both DePauw’s Mike Moore and Trinity’s B.J. Moon are capable of taking over basketball games, and neither will hesitate to carry their team’s scoring load. Trinity stumbled slightly down the stretch, but a healthy Charles Houston (the most underrated player in the conference, in this writer’s opinion) should make a big-time difference. I expect some physical defense, some floor burns, and some hard-nosed play from both squads. But in the end, I think Steve Schott will be too much for Trinity in the post, and that will provide DePauw with the edge.

THE PICK: DePauw 68, Trinity 62

Game 3 – Millsaps (West #1) vs Rhodes (East #4)

IN 2007-2008: Millsaps 93, Rhodes 72 @ Millsaps, February 1

The Majors will enter the SCAC Tournament as the #22 team in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, but their status as an NCAA Tournament team is far from assured if they don’t win three straight in Conway. Don’t think for one second that Tim Wise’s bunch doesn’t know that. The most athletic team in the conference will be hungry and motivated. Rhodes is led by Cory Smith, one of the most dynamic scorers in the conference, but the pieces just haven’t gelled together for the Lynx this year. If Rhodes shoots the ball well, they can hang in there, but I don’t see anybody wearing red and black that can handle Millsaps’ Edrick Montgomery in the post. It’s close for a half, but Millsaps turns it into a track meet in the second half.

THE PICK: Millsaps 88, Rhodes 74

Game 4 – Oglethorpe (East #2) vs Hendrix (West #3)

IN 2007-2008: Oglethorpe 71, Hendrix 70 @ Hendrix, January 20

Phillip Ponder’s Stormy Petrels have been the surprise of the SCAC this season, winning 16 games with a deep and youthful bunch. Seniors Craig Jackson and Ahmad Kareem Shaheed are playing great, and freshman Todd Ward is one of the most dynamic talents in the conference. With a gutty double-OT win over DePauw on the final day of the regular season, the Petrels locked up the 2-seed and avoided having to run a possible Trinity-Centre gauntlet to get to the championship round. The reward for Oglethorpe is a date with the tournament’s host team in the Friday night primetime slot. Grove Gym should be rocking, and Andrew King and company have the horses for the upset. There’s precedent for such a thing, after all – remember Rhodes’ stunning upset of Trinity in the first round in 2006 in Memphis? This won’t quite be on the same level, but I like the Warriors to stop Oglethorpe’s breakout season in its tracks.

THE PICK: Hendrix 77, Oglethorpe 75

Game 5 – Centre vs DePauw

IN 2007-2008: Centre 78, DePauw 64 @ Centre, 12/1/07

                        Centre 66, DePauw 63 @ DePauw, 2/16/08

Can the third time be a charm for the Old Gold? With nothing certain regarding an at-large berth, the careers of four DePauw seniors could be on the line in this one, and two of them – Steve Schott and Brian Oilar – are capable of exploiting Centre’s lack of defensive presence in the post. Centre controlled the first meeting between the two teams in the conference opener, but DePauw considerably closed the gap, and if not for two tough late buckets by Player of the Year frontrunner Thomas Britt, DePauw probably beats the Colonels in Greencastle in the second meeting. Two years ago, these two teams were about as evenly matched as possible. Centre beat DePauw in two overtime games in the regular season. When the two teams met in the SCAC Championship game… well, do I really need to remind you what happened in that one? Even though Austin Brown won’t be in the building for this one, I think DePauw recaptures that 2006 magic. Schott and Oilar come up big, and the Tigers get some breaks down the stretch.

THE PICK: DePauw 69, Centre 64

Game 6 – Millsaps vs Hendrix

IN 2007-2008: Millsaps 79, Hendrix 64 @ Hendrix, 12/1/07

                        Millsaps 78, Hendrix 55 @ Millsaps, 2/15/08

Hendrix’s exciting quarterfinal win will have folks in Conway buzzing, and there will be another pro-Warriors crowd at Grove Gym to see this semifinal matchup. If you like great post play, you’re in luck, as Andrew King and Edrick Montgomery will wage war down low all afternoon long. The key for Hendrix will be finding an answer for Millsaps’ other top scorers, Rodney Rogan and Lorenzo Bailey. I think Millsaps’ backcourt of Bailey, Chris Sanders, and Chad Songy will be too quick for their Hendrix counterparts. The Majors will avoid falling in the conference semis for the second straight year by pulling this one out.

THE PICK: Millsaps 84, Hendrix 76

Championship – Millsaps vs DePauw

IN 2007-2008: DePauw 90, Millsaps 80 @ DePauw, January 27

The first time these two got together this season, Millsaps was coming off a demoralizing come-from-ahead OT loss at Centre two nights earlier. After a good start, the Majors, particularly Montgomery, flatlined a bit. The result was a convincing DePauw victory over the then #18 team in the country. This time around, things won’t be so easy for the Old Gold. For one, both teams will be worn out playing for the third straight day. It will be another tough matchup in the post for Edrick Montgomery, but he’s at his best when there’s a lot on the line, and I think he’ll have a huge game in this one. With these two teams, you’ll see a lot of three balls fired up, as both teams are capable of scoring big from beyond the arc. In the end, I see Montgomery and Rodney Rogan being the difference. This time, it’ll be the Majors with enough left in the tank to outlast DePauw, taking home their first SCAC Tournament title.

THE PICK: Millsaps 87, DePauw 81
