| CREATING YOUR WEB SITE WITH
FRONT PAGE 2002 |
 |
Open a web
Important:
As of January, 2003 and the new site launch, site authors no longer
need to use a local copy of their sites (p: drive or local machine).
All authors should work 'live'. Here are the instructions to open your
website for edit directly on the web server.
- To open a web on the DePauw web server, browse to
your site in
Internet Explorer and click the Edit with FrontPage button (also
located in the File menu). When prompted, enter your username and
password.

- OR -
To
open a web on the DePauw web server, open frontpage, go to the File menu,
click Open
Web.
In
the Web Name box type the
URL to that web, and then click Open.
For example, to open the Web Authors site, you would type: http://www.depauw.edu/weba.
When
prompted, enter your username and password. in
the Web Name box. This allows you to edit your "live" site,
without importing and publishing from a local computer.
Save changes to a web
When editing live, saving changes to your web is simple: just click
Save. That's it! The changes will take effect on the live site
immediately, so be sure you want them to be reflected on the public site.
If you want to build a page over time, or save changes for review
before making them public, place them in a subfolder in your site called
"test". For example, the test area of the Web Authors site would be at
http://www.depauw.edu/weba/test
. Pages in test folders can still be previewed in a browser, but are
excluded from the site search engine, preventing accidental discovery by
visitors. When you're ready to make the page live, drag it out of the test
folder and create the appropriate links to it.
Publish a web
Important:
As of January, 2003 and the new site launch, site authors no longer need
to use Publish to update their sites. All authors should edit their sites
on the live server, as per instructions above in "Open
a web".
Publish the files in the current web when you are ready to present your
web for public viewing, or when you want to update the files in your web
on the DePauw web server. When you publish your web, you have the following
options:
- Publish only the files that have changed: FrontPage compares the files
on your computer to the files on the Web server, and only those files
that are newer than those on the Web server are published. However,
files that have been marked Don't Publish will not be
published.
- Publish all files, except those that have been marked Don't
Publish: The files from the local web will overwrite all files on
the destination Web server, even if the files on the Web server are
newer.
- Publish subwebs: If the current web has subwebs,
all files and folders in
subwebs will be recursively published in addition to those files and
folders in the current web.
-
On the File menu, click Publish Web.

-
Click Options to see the list of options.

-
Specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed, or all
pages and click OK.
-
To publish subwebs, select the Include subwebs check
box.
-
In the Specify the location to publish your web to
box, type the location of a Web server, click the arrow to select a
location to which you have published before, or click Browse
to find the publishing location.
-
Click Publish.
Tip After FrontPage publishes your web, you can verify that your web was successfully
published by browsing to it using the "View published web"
option.
Tip If you cancel publishing in the middle of the
operation. Files that have already been published remain on the
destination Web server.

a new web

and then choose Empty Web
- In the Web Site Templates list, select the empty web one
or the DePauw Template if available.

View a site summary
The Site Summary
report gives you an overview of your web's vital statistics, such as the
number and sizes of files and pictures, number and types of hyperlinks,
number of incomplete tasks, and so on. Think of it as a high-level
inventory and diagnosis of your web.
Note: If your web contains files located in hidden
folders, those files will not be included in this report. To include files
in hidden folders in your reports, click Web Settings on
the Tools menu, click the Advanced tab,
and then select the Show documents in hidden directories
check box.
-
On the View menu, point to Reports,
and then click Site Summary.
