Resizing large images using Fireworks

Larger images can slow down your web pages and are particularly problematic for visitors on a modem. You can resize a larger image for your Web site easily using Macromedia Fireworks.

Step One

Open Macromedia Fireworks and your image

Click the Star Menu button and choose Macromedia and then Fireworks.
Note: Newer versions are by Adobe rather than Macromedia.

Open Macromedia Fireworks

Click File and Open.

Click File and Open

Select the image you wish to resize and click OK.

Select your image

Step One

Open the Resize dialogue box

Click Modify from the Menu at the top of Fireworks and then Canvas and choose the option Image Size.

Choose modify canvas and then image size

Step One

Resize your image

Check to make certain that the Constrain proportions box is checked. This will insure that your images will not become stretched out of proportion.

Choose your new image size by typing a number in the width or height box.

Here I've picked 550 Pixels wide so that my image fits within the DePauw Template on smaller screens.

Step One

Preview your image

If your image was originally larger than your screen size you may find that after you resize it the image will appear tiny. This is because Fireworks has Zoomed out. To Zoom in, double click the Magnifying glass icon in the lower left hand corner.

Step One

Save the image as a different file name

It is important that you save your new image with a different name so that the original file is not lost. To do this, choose File from the menu at the top and pick Save As. Type in a new file name and click OK. An Example is "testpicture-resized.jpg".
