The DePauw Web Templates

How To Copy The Template To Your Website

Before you can start creating new web page with the new templates, you need to get your copy of the templates in your website. Working with your copy of the templates allows you to customize them with your specific needs (contact e-mail address, title and navigation) while making sure that the original templates are preserved for all web authors.

Most of the authors will find the templates already copied in their website and customized to their needs, as a result of the redesign process performed by the WebTeam by the end of 2002. This section is provided in case you need to copy the template again, or if you don't have it in your website at all.

The templates are named : 'plain_templates.asp' and 'wide_template.asp'.

1. Download the templates as a .zip file (right-click and save as), and save it to your local machine.

2. Unzip the files in the .zip file. (again, they will still reside on your local machine)

3. Find the unzipped files on your local machine, right-click on the desired template, and click "Copy".

4. Open your web in FrontPage, so that you can see the folder list on the left side of the screen.

5. Right-click in the folder list where you want to save the template, and click "Paste".

Creating New Web Page Using The Template

Which Template To Use ?

In most cases the regular template will suit your needs. The maroon column on the left is for your navigation, as in the previous gold template. You'll see that even the regular template provides more content space than the previous gold template.

If you plan to have very large tables or pictures, you should use the wide template. It provides more content space, but eliminates the left-hand navigation area (as on the page you're currently viewing).

Opening The Templates In FrontPage:

Open your copy of the template, located in your web directory.

The new DePauw template contains 2 include files that make up the top of each page. The first file is the DePauw logo and the date. The second file is the photo banner with the Uncommon Success Begins at DePauw. You will not be able to view them when you are editing in FrontPage.

The template in FrontPage looks like this :

Note the absence of the graphics at the top of the page. It's normal, they will appear on your page once saved on the web site and viewed with a browser.

Saving As Your New Page

Use "Save As" and give a name to your page. Use no spaces, caps or special characters (ex: "my_page.asp" is ok, NOT "My Page.asp")

The extension MUST be .asp (Save as type : Active Server Page). This allows the graphical header to be added to your page.

Don't use the "Save" command or you'll overwrite your template. Using "Save As" allows you to keep the original template file for further use.
