Response to Chauvin Trial Verdict

Dear DePauw Faculty, Staff and Students,

I write to you tonight following the Derek Chauvin trial verdict to share deeply personal feelings. I am married to an African-American, have nephews and uncles and many other African-American men I consider members of my extended family. I desperately long for them to live in a world that values their lives and the lives of every person, regardless of race.

Statement in Response to Indianapolis Shooting

Dear DePauw Faculty, Staff and Students,

We woke up this morning to news of yet another mass shooting, and one that has occurred close to home for all of us at the FedEx Ground Facility near the Indianapolis Airport. I am writing today because there may be those in our DePauw and Greencastle community who have family, friends and others they know who have been directly affected by this tragedy.

My Thoughts for Thursday: Events of Jan. 6

Dear DePauw Faculty, Staff and Students, 

Yesterday, before the assault on our nation’s capital, I heard Reverend Raphael Warnock, the newly elected and first African American senator from Georgia, reflect that only in America could the son of a woman who picked cotton become a U.S. senator. Essentially, his message conveyed the sentiment that democracy works, despite its imperfections and the fact as a country we are still working to live up to our true ideals.

It's Election Day

November 3, 2020

Dear DePauw Campus Community, 
Today, Tuesday, November 3 is officially Election Day. 

The right to vote, for those of us who are eligible is an incredible privilege, particularly given that voting has not always been and is still not possible for particular members of our communities. It has been incredible to see voter turnout at such high levels and voter determination such that people have been willing to stand in line for however long it takes to make sure their vote is recorded. I have loved seeing all of the “I VOTED” posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and have been so impressed that the majority of DePauw students with whom I have spoken are among those who have already voted or plan to vote today.
