Strategic Planning Goals and Rationales
Goal 1: Academic Renewal
DePauw will renew and revitalize its academic programs, deepening its longstanding commitment to the liberal arts, while creating new and distinctive programs that reflect advances in academic disciplines, respond to students’ changing priorities and the demands of a rapidly evolving marketplace.
Guided by reliable data about students’ evolving preferences and purposes, DePauw will revise, or create new, academic programs that will attract, retain, and graduate students whose success will be measured by their engagement as leaders and thinkers, their creativity and imagination, their readiness for rewarding careers, and their service to local, national and world communities. DePauw will sustain the liberal arts as the sound foundation for academic innovation, interdisciplinary teaching and learning, and the elevation of each student’s potential; every DePauw student, regardless of school or major, will be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences.
Goal 2: Exemplary Student Experience
DePauw will enhance the vibrancy of the student experience in ways that bring our diverse community of students together while supporting individual student identities and interests, motivating students to expand their horizons, strengthening their health and well-being, and creating a strong bond of belonging at the University.
DePauw must both attract and retain students by offering an experience, inside and outside the classroom, that they both relish and enjoy. We must inspire and motivate all of our students, fostering among them an appreciation for the remarkable community that the University gathers and making their time on campus exceed their expectations—it should be just the beginning of a lifetime commitment to one another and to DePauw.
Goal 3: Institutional Equity
DePauw will become a more fully inclusive and equitable institution by changing all aspects of the student, employee, and alumni experience that are not fully aligned with our values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The principle of equity demands that no student, member of the faculty or staff, or our alumni community is hindered in any way from participating fully in the University’s programs, services, and activities, and that the opportunities that DePauw creates are accessible to every member of the campus community. In order to advance its own culture and meet the needs of each new generation of students, DePauw must name, acknowledge, and change historical practices and experiences that have not been centered on equity and actively demonstrate how it supports diversity, equity, and inclusion to effectively live its commitment to these values. In doing so, DePauw must engage all members of the community as contributors and participants, and as teachers and learners to underscore the centrality of diversity, equity, and inclusion to the mission of the University.
Goal 4: DePauw as a Flourishing University
DePauw will flourish as a community, an educational institution and an employer, through strategic investments in our academic core mission, a strong workforce, operational excellence, and fiscal stewardship.
To thrive, flourish and position itself as one of the very best liberal arts colleges in the country, DePauw must make the highest and best use of all its resources in recruiting, developing, and retaining diverse and highly talented students, faculty, and staff. Correspondingly, DePauw must exhibit exceptional and disciplined fiscal management to maximize its investment in excellent academic programs and a superior student experience.
