2019 DePauw Summer English Immersion Institute Teaching Assistants

One of the most beneficial features of the English Institute is building relationships with the upper-class DePauw student who serve as Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants support students adjustment to life at DePauw both inside and outside the classroom. These skilled student leaders become valuable resources and first friends for new international students who participate in the English Institute.

Please meet the Summer English Immersion Institute Teaching Assistants welcoming the 2019-20 SEII participants:

Area Guede Ramos

Area SEII 2019-20Hi guys! My name is Area Guede Ramos, I am a rising junior from Spain, and I am an English Writing and Religious Studies double major. At DePauw, I am a First-Year Mentor, the Co-President of the International Student Association, President of the Photography Club, and the Poetry Editor for A Midwestern Review. I enjoy reading and writing poetry, dancing, roller skating, traveling, and meeting new people! I also love being really involved on campus, particularly with art-focused clubs, as well as organizations that work towards celebrating all the different cultures present at DePauw. I am really excited to be a Teaching Assistant for the 2023 class of international students!

Jingbin Cao

Jingbin Cao SEII TA Hey guys, I am a rising senior here at DePauw. I am from Beijing, China. I am double majoring in math and music. I love to meet new people around the world. I enjoy learning different music, perspectives, and behaviors from other cultures and societies. Besides, I like working on math problems, doing music appreciation, and biking. You can find me at the gym, in the GCPA, or riding my bike around campus. Some of my roles on campus include the Intern of Admission Office, the Consultant of Speaking and Listening Center, the Tutor of Quantitative Reasoning Center, First-Year Mentor, President of International Student Association, and President of Asia Club. I can’t wait to be a Teaching Assistant and spend a splendid time with all the Class of 2023 students attending the English Institute this August. Please feel free to ask me any questions that you have; I can’t be more willing to help you!

Madeline Smith

Madeline Smith SEII TAI am a rising fourth-year English literature and Spanish double major from Fort Wayne, Indiana. One of my biggest loves is poetry from the Romantic period, and my favorite writer is Virginia Woolf. You can find me on campus at the Academic Resource Center as a Writing Tutor or as a student worker at Roy O. West Library. I'm planning on attending graduate school for English literature after my DePauw career ends, and I hope to eventually become a professor of English. I will just have returned from a semester abroad in Argentina when the Summer Institute begins, and I look forward to meeting you all and hopefully being a great tutor!

Malak Daher

Malak DaherMy name is Malak Daher and I'm an upcoming senior. I am double majoring in psychology and studio art, as well as minoring in philosophy. I can speak 3 languages fluently including English, French, and Arabic. I spent most of my days painting and drawing. I also enjoy taking walks at the nature park. Please feel free to contact me anytime about anything you want me to give you an advice on.

Margot Leiner

Margot Leiner SEII TAI am senior Chinese Studies major from Minneapolis, Minnesota. At DePauw, I am a First Year Mentor, Honor Scholar, DJ at WGRE, member of DePauw Dance Marathon and a member of my sorority Alpha Chi Omega. For my junior year, I spent the fall semester studying in Hong Kong and the spring semester practicing my Mandarin in Shanghai, China. Being immersed in a new culture and using a foreign language every day helped me learn even more about appreciating cultural differences. I hope as an English Teaching Assistant I can use my experience to help first year students adjust to life at DePauw, including supporting students through the difficult times and celebrating with them during the successful ones. I look forward to being back on campus and having the opportunity to establish meaningful relationships with the incoming international students!

Melissa Browning

Melissa SEII TA 2019-20My name is Melissa Browning and I am a rising senior from Indianapolis, Indiana. I am an English Writing major and a History and Education Studies minor, and am hoping to pursue a career in teaching after graduating from DePauw. On campus I am a First-Year Mentor, a Writing Center Tutor, in the Honor Scholar program, and am actively involved in my sorority. When I'm not busy studying, you might see me around campus running, biking, reading on East College lawn, or taking a nap in my purple hammock. I just spent a semester abroad in Glasgow, Scotland, so I am excited to be back on campus for my senior year. Being a TA for the Summer Institute has by far been one of my favorite DePauw experiences, and I can't wait to return this summer to build meaningful friendships with the incoming international students.
