2020 Virtual Summer English Institute
Prepare yourself for a successful first year as a DePauw student.
COVID-19 Update: We are currently reviewing this program for any adjustments needed due to COVID-19.
DePauw's Virtual Summer English Institute is a comprehensive academic and cultural program tailored for international students. Students will work intensively on their academic writing, speaking and reading skills in English. Additionally, through activities and interactions with professors and student leaders, English Institute participants will learn more about the United States and local community where they will study for the next four years. This program will be held in a virtual DePauw classroom from August 3 - August 16, 2020. The fee of 100 USD for this academic program includes instruction and books. Students who successfully complete the institute receive DePauw extended studies credit.
All new DePauw students are required to take a writing-intensive First-Year Seminar. The English Institute is designed to give First Year international students the following advantages as they prepare for their first year of student life:
First-hand experience in the DePauw virtual classroom;
Intensive preparation for an all-English academic environment, with a focus on writing;
Individualized English language and academic support;
The opportunity to establish friendships with other first year students in advance.
The DePauw Virtual Summer English Institute is a unique opportunity for students to start their DePauw experience early and prepare for academic success. Spaces are limited in order to ensure personal attention for each participating student. We strongly encourage you to complete the online application by the deadline of June 1, 2020. Do not miss this opportunity to gain an advantage before the academic year begins!
English Institute Teaching Assistants
One of the most beneficial features of the English Institute is building relationships with the upperclass DePauw student who serve as Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants support students adjustment to life at DePauw both inside and outside the classroom. These skilled student leaders become valuable resources and first friends for new international students who participate in the English Institute. Meet the 2019 English Institute Teaching Assistants here.
Summer 2020 Virtual English Institute Teaching Assistant application is now closed. We will share shortly information about the new Teaching Assistants here.
Transportation to campus
International Student Services will pick new international students up at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on the required arrival date. Students should reserve a seat on their desired airport shuttle in advance through the online New International Student Checklist. The tentative departure times for airport shuttles from the Indianapolis International Airport for DePauw's campus are 10:00 am, 2:00 pm (14:00) & 6:00 pm (18:00) and the required arrival date will be published in the Checklist. Parents accompanying their students to campus can also request a seat on our airport shuttle.
ISS staff will arrive approximately 20 minutes before each shuttle departs to greet students and assist with questions or concerns. DePauw's shuttle bus will be parked outside the Ground Transportation area (where rental car companies and other buses are stationed). Students who experience travel delays should contact ISS staff as early as possible to provide updated arrival time and flight information, and staff will make arrangements for delayed students to be picked up at the new arrival time. Cell phone numbers for ISS staff will be provided to students before the English Institute begins.
Check-in with DePauw ISS staff on arrival day
Upon arrival to campus (9:00 am - 7:00 pm), students will meet ISS staff at the Student Memorial Union Building (408 S. Locust Street, Greencastle, IN 46135) to check in for the Summer English Immersion Institute, get keys to their living unit, receive instructions for their first days of the Institute, and have the chance to ask questions.
Students arriving to campus outside the 9:00 am - 7:00 pm time frame on the required arrival day, shall contact ISS for alternative arrangements at firstname.lastname@example.org.
