Balanced School Scores: Recalculating Indiana Public School Performance
This project will be a desktop application that will rate Indiana public schools according to both their effectiveness and their demographics. The current system in our state frequently rewards wealthy schools and punishes less fortunate schools through a system that evaluates test scores and graduation rates without examining the economic circumstances of a given school. My application will re-rate Indiana public schools using both annual school performance reports from the Indiana Department of Education website and demographic information by unified school district from the Statistical Atlas website. It will also use statistics from a paper titled The Constraints of Poverty on High Achievement to inform my calculation of school score. These scores will be used to demonstrate educational achievement of a school district compared to other school districts with similar demographics.
