GEOS GSA Meeting - Wilkerson Research Group Reunion

Scott Wilkerson at research group reunion

October 29, 2013

While at the 2013 Geological Society of America annual meeting in Denver, Scott Wilkerson and Jim Mills enjoyed dinner with department alums (from left to right) Melissa Penfold '12, Connie Dicken '99, and Sara Smaltz '06.

This was a "reunion" of sorts as each of these ladies conducted research with Scott during their DePauw careers.  Melissa (currently a graduate student at the University of Nevada-Reno) worked with Scott on a project involving analysis of a geologic map and six serial cross sections through the Hudson Valley, NY.  Connie (now working for the USGS in Reston, VA and specializing in GIS) and Scott's work on quick-look techniques for balancing cross sections in contractional settings was published in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin (and was featured on the cover). Sara (presently working as an operations/development geologist at EnCana Petroleum in Denver, CO) conducted research on detachment folding in the Monterrey fold belt in Mexico that was published in the Journal of Structural Geology.  Scott recalls, "It was a true pleasure to work with each of these ladies.  Not only were they strong students, but they also had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and an even stronger work ethic.  I have enjoyed watching them grow as scientists in their post-DePauw careers and look forward to their continued success in the years to come."
