One of the Institute of Music’s non-auditioned ensembles, the DePauw Symphonic Band, was created with the goal of offering College of Liberal Arts musicians (as well as Institute of Music students on their secondary instruments) an opportunity to create and perform in a curricular musical ensemble.
The Symphonic Band provides playing experiences for College of Liberal Arts majors, and Institute of Music majors who want to improve their technique and skills on secondary woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. The mission of the Symphonic Band is to provide maximum enjoyment with limited performance demands for students who wish to continue to perform in a large ensemble as part of their collegiate educational experience.
Featured concert performances take place once each semester in our concert venue, Kresge Auditorium in the Green Center for the Performing Arts. In addition, the Symphonic Band serenades the campus prior to the end of the first semester in early December. It was also honored to contribute musically to the presidential inauguration of Dr. Lori White.
Auditions are not required to join the Symphonic Band. The only requirement is that each student musician has prior experience on a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument.
