Benjamin Smith

Benjamin Aaron Smith, DM is a dedicated arts advocate, a champion of new music, and a proponent of arts entrepreneurship and career advancement training preparing musicians for a career in the 21st Century. Smith is a teacher, and tenor, receiving his Doctorate of Music in Voice at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana studying with Patricia Havranek and Dr. Brian Horne. At DePauw, Benjamin has taught several 21CM courses, also serving as faculty for the 21st Century Musician Institute on Music Entrepreneurship. He was a Yamaha Graduate Fellow for the Eastman Leadership Conference in Rochester, New York and his current research includes entrepreneurship and leadership training within higher education curriculum.

Smith is a native of Evansville, Indiana and has explored performance, pedagogy, and arts administration throughout his career including the founding of New Voices Opera, a chamber opera training program, and performances in opera, music theatre, competition, and in concert. Benjamin maintains a small private studio in Bloomington, IN where his students have enjoyed success either as hobbyists or professionals appearing on Broadway and regional and collegiate stages throughout the country.

Benjamin is also the Tasting Room Sales Manager at Oliver Winery in Bloomington, IN where he enjoys bringing people together through wine, exploring his entrepreneurial interests in the wine industry while providing experiences and hospitality for over 250,000 guests a year. When he’s not teaching music or viticulture, Benjamin enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy and his two cats, and woodworking in his garage shop in Bloomington.
