Brass

DePauw University's brass area consists of trumpet, trombone, tuba, euphonium, and French horn. Brass students regularly participate in the University Band, University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and chamber ensembles.

Opportunities

There are a variety of opportunities for brass majors.

  • Brass majors have the opportunity to audition for the yearly concerto competition.
  • As world renowned guest artists visit DePauw, our students are able to imagine a broader vision of what is possible as a 21st-century performing artist. Master teachers are invited to campus to work with DePauw brass students in a variety of instructional and performance settings. Clinicians have included Velvet Brown, Tom Riccobono, St. Louis Brass Quintet, and members of Canadian Brass.
  • Brass majors regularly participate in large ensembles, including the DePauw University Orchestra, DePauw University Band, or DePauw Jazz Ensemble. They can also perform in a variety of brass chamber ensembles are offered each semester.
  • Brass majors can participate in the orchestra for DePauw Musicals and DePauw Operas.
  • Brass major learn more about their instrument in degree specific courses such as Symphonic Literature and Pedagogy.
  • Off-Campus Study: There are a rich array of opportunities available to DePauw students for both international and domestic off-campus study. Locations recently selected include Vienna, Milan, Paris, London, Dresden, New York, Philadelphia and Florence.
  • DePauw is a leading university for study abroad and internship opportunities and this is especially the case for our School of Music students. DePauw Music Students have recently studied in Austria, Brazil, and New York City, and performed internships and tours in China and Germany.

What does being a 21st Century Musician mean to you?
Being a 21st Century Musician means being able to adapt and be creative. 21st Century Musicians think outside the box and connect their music to social initiatives and the ever changing landscape of the technological world. 21st Century Musicians are innovators and help others succeed on the way.
Other Opportunities from the DePauw Experience: During Summer 2020, I worked an internship with Google. I was an intern in their small business sales department and managed over $380,000 between 38 nonprofit clients. I helped them optimize their Google Ads accounts and reach marketing goals and advertising objectives. 

Brass FACULTY

Brass professors teach all applied lessons and brass classes and direct brass ensembles. Brass faculty maintain active membership within the International Horn Society, International Trombone Association, International Trumpet Guild, International Tuba-Euphonium Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Additionally they are recitalists, studio artists, clinicians, and judges for state, regional, and national competitions.
