“I would like to sincerely thank all who have supported the furthering of my education. I am a person who loves to learn and sees just how important an education is. I aspire to become a leader in quantum computing, and I know that my DePauw education is the first step on that track and will give me a very solid foundation to pursue my goals. Your support is highly valued and never forgotten. Thank you very much for all you have done.”

Greg Schwipps

English professor Greg Schwipps ’95 was recently honored for the second time in his career as the Richard W. Peck Professor in Creative Writing. The professorship, a two-year appointment, was established through a gift from world-renowned author Richard W. Peck ’56. Peck earned a degree in English from DePauw and went on to become a prolific, Newberry Medal-winning author of young adult literature.

The Peck Professorship grants a small stipend and a course release to the awardee, so Schwipps will teach two courses instead of three, allowing him to use the released time to work on his own novel and nonfiction works. “The idea is the time and energy you would have dedicated to teaching that course becomes your time and energy that you can now spend on your writing during the semester. I can't put a price on time. I can't put a price on energy. That's a wonderful gift. Any award like this that gives you time and says, ‘We still believe in you; don't give up.’  is a true blessing.”

Crandall legacy endows prestigious professorships, need-based scholarship at DePauw University

The Crandalls

Albert Edwin Crandall ’56 and his wife Bertha Louise Woods Crandall ’50 were longtime supporters of DePauw.  For many years, the Crandalls contributed at the Named Scholar level, and enjoyed meeting with students who benefited from The Fund for DePauw Scholarships they helped provide. The Crandalls were deeply influenced by their DePauw experience, especially by the university’s great professors. They left an estate gift of more than $5 million to endow two professorships, a need-based scholarship fund at DePauw University, as well as support for the university’s new School of Business and Leadership. In addition to the large monetary gift, the Crandalls also donated precious artwork consisting of portraits, bronze sculptures and Civil War memorabilia. Read more
