Aikido

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself. #Wellness

SCAPEGOATS: How Islamophobia Helps Our Enemies and Threatens Our Freedom by Arsalan Iftikhar

Arsalan Iftikhar is an international human rights lawyer, global media commentator and author of the book SCAPEGOATS: How Islamophobia Helps Our Enemies & Threatens Our Freedoms which President Jimmy Carter called "an important book that shows Islamophobia must be addressed urgently." He also serves as Senior Editor for The Islamic Monthly and for nearly a decade, Arsalan was a regular on-air weekly commentator for National Public Ratio (NPR). He wa also names on of the top 12 Muslim Twitter accounts in the world by The Huffington Post in May 2011. Arsalan has been an adjunct professor of religious studies at DePaul University and is also a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and Reporters Without Borders.

Yoga

This is a level one/level two Hatha Yoga - Vinyasa Flow class. In each class there will always be instruction in how to move into poses (asanas) in order to arrive at proper alignment (hatha), as well as continuous movement linking poses (vinyasa). As the school year progresses and participants become more familiar with the poses we'll incorporate more flow linking asanas. The coordination of breath and movement will be emphasized, as well as the non-competitive nature of yoga practice and its relation to meditation. The use of props to assist in proper alignment is encouraged, and poses will progress from basics to more challenging moves, so that beginners as well as those with more yoga experience can participate at an appropriate level for them.  #Wellness

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez: Earth Week Keynote Speaker

Xiuhtezcatl is a 16 year old indigenous climate activist, hip-hop artist, and a powerful voice on the front lines of a global youth-led environmental movement. At the early age of six, Xiuhtezcatl began speaking around the world from the Rio+20 United Nations Summit in Rio de Janeiro, to addressing the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York. He is the Youth Director of Earth Guardians, an organization of young activists, artists, and musicians from across the globe stepping up as leaders and working together to create positive change in their communities to address climate change and other important issues that will define our future.  Xiuhtezcatl is a plaintiff in a landmark lawsuit of children suing the U.S. government for failure to protect the atmosphere and their future. He has traveled across the nation and to many parts of the world educating his generation about the state of the planet they are inheriting and inspiring them into action to protect the Earth. His movement has grown to over 2,000 youth-led Earth Guardian crews globally working on the frontline to combat climate change. His work has been featured on PBS, Showtime, National Geographic, Rolling Stones, Upworthy, The Guardian, Vogue, CNN, MSNBC, HBO, and many more.In 2013, Xiuhtezcatl received the 2013 United States Community Service Award from President Obama and was the youngest of 24 national change-makers chosen to serve on the President's youth council.  He is the 2015 recipient of the Peace First Prize and the recipient of the 2015 Nickelodeon Halo Award. Bill Mckibben of 350.org calls Xiuhtezcatl "an impressive spokesman for a viewpoint the world needs to hear.”This event is sponsored by the Environmental Fellows Program, Prindle Institute, Peace and Conflict Studies, DePauw Environmental Club, and Multicultural and International Life.  This event is free and open to the public.

He is also the author of  Red Moon (Grand Central/Hachette, May 2013) and The Wilding (Graywolf Press, 2010), as well as two books of short stories, Refresh, Refresh (Graywolf Press, 2007) and The Language of Elk (Grand Central/Hachette, 2012; Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2006).His craft book — Thrill Me: Essays on Fiction — was published by Graywolf Press in October of 2016. And his next novel, The Dark Net, is due out in 2017 with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.His fiction and nonfiction have been read on National Public Radio, performed at Symphony Space, and published by Esquire, GQ, Time, Men’s Journal, Outside, The Wall Street Journal, The Paris Review, McSweeney’s, Ploughshares, Glimmer Train, and Tin House. He also writes the Green Arrow and Teen Titans series at DC Comics.His honors include a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Whiting Writers’ Award, two Pushcart Prizes, the Plimpton Prize, and inclusion in Best American Short Stories and Best American Comics.He is a member of the WGA screenwriters’ guild and has sold scripts to FOX and Starz. He currently has several film and TV projects in development.He has taught at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
