Global Musician Workshop: Participant-Artist Concert III

If you love world music, Greencastle, Indiana, is the place to be this week. For the third 

successive year, DePauw University School of Music is honored to host Silkroad’s Global 

Musician Workshop (May 30-June 5). The GMW workshop, which brings nearly 100 

participating musicians to campus from around the globe, reconvenes on May 30 and 

continues for seven full days, including six straight nights of live music in two venues for 

an extraordinary week of world music.

 

Although registration to participate as a musician has closed, several evening events are 

open to all to attend free of charge, including the exceptional GMW Faculty Concerts on 

Wednesday and Thursday nights. The first of these performances, co-sponsored by the 

Greencastle Summer Music Festival, will take place in Gobin United Methodist Church (307 

Simpson), and the second in Kresge Auditorium, located within DePauw’s Green Center for 

the Performing Arts (605 S. College Avenue), followed by four equally inspiring faculty-led 

Participant-Artist Concerts (June 2–5), also in Kresge Auditorium. All begin at 7:30 p.m.

 

This year’s all-star international faculty, directed by Silk Road Ensemble cellist MIKE BLOCK, 

includes HANNEKE CASSEL (Celtic fiddle), SANDEEP DAS (Indian tabla), DANNY MEKONNEN 

(Ethiopian-American saxophones), BRUCE MOLSKY (Old-time Appalachian fiddle), HANKUS 

NETSKY (Klezmer multi-instrumentalist), AOIFE O’DONOVAN (bluegrass vocals and guitar), 

EDWARD PEREZ (Afro-Latin bass), BASSAM SABA (Arabic multi-instrumentalist), SHANE 

SHANAHAN (world percussion) and WU MAN (Chinese pipa).

Kettlebell AMPD

Kettlebell AMPD takes heart-pumping music and your favorite kettlebell moves and combines them for calorie-torching fun! This whole-body workout emphasizes group fitness and focuses on specific areas such as arms, legs, core, and cardio. Each song concentrates on a main area, while still maintaining a whole-body routine.  Weights vary anywhere from 5-15lbs, so the workout can be adjusted and moves modified to suit your individual needs. Anyone can take this class! The music is diverse and moves are simple and easy to learn. Get lost in the music and push yourself with the most effective, fulfilling, and lively workout available! #Wellness

Aikidio

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself. #Wellness

Workouts are usually never the same in order to avoid fitness platueas and boredom.  Boot camp is a high intensity workout, but modifications are provided so that this class is appropriate for all fitness levels. #Wellness
