College Ave.The uniquely challenging "Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion," a rarely heard work by Béla Bartók, is featured on this program exploring the piano as a percussive instrument. Taking up the challenge will be guest pianist Ann DuHamel from the University of Minnesota, Morris, and DePauw faculty artists May Phang, piano, and percussionists Ming-Hui Kuo and Craig Paré on timpani, gran cassa, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, tam-tam and xylophone.

From Refugees to Reformation: The Backstory to the Ninety-Five Theses

Add to Calendar8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Could a refugee crisis really have helped fire the Reformation? This lecture will explore some of the back story to the famous Ninety-Five Theses and ask just that question. How did the Fall of Constantinople end up affecting a bible professor in Wittenberg Germany 60 years later?

Dr. David Whitford, M.Div., of Baylor University's Department of Religion researches and writes about the social, cultural, and political impact of the European Reformations of the sixteenth century. In 2009, he authored a book on the ways in which the Bible was used to support the Transatlantic slave trade, The Curse of Ham in the Early Modern Era: The Bible and Justifications for Slavery. He continues to be interested in the ways in which the Bible was used and interpreted in the Early Modern Era. In 2015, he authored an introduction to the Reformation aimed at a more general audience, A Reformation Life.

This event is free and open to the public.

Mariposas Sin Fronteras/Border Studies Program

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Mariposas Sin Fronteras, Tucson, Arizona

Speaker

Karolina Lopez: Karolina López is a transgender woman who was held in custody at a detention center for immigrants in Eloy, Arizona for three years, where she suffered discrimination and sexual abuse on account of her gender identity. Three years after leaving detention and winning her asylum case, Karolina has become a leader in the LGBTQ movement of undocumented people and has defended the rights of LGBTQ people detained in immigration detention.  Karolina, an organizer with Mariposas sin Fronteras, migrated to the United States from Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, where she was born. Forced to leave her home and family due to sexual orientation and gender identity, Karolina migrated to the Unites States fleeing homophobia and transphobia. When Karolina arrived in the Unites States she found an often-hostile, dangerous reality similar to the one she left. After being a victim of a violent crime in 2009, Karolina found herself trapped by the immigration system where she experienced a series of human rights abuses.  Karolina’s presentation will tell the story of her lived, migrant experience. Students will learn about gender identity and transphobia, the challenges and limitations immigrants experience when applying for asylum, the environments inside immigration detention centers, and the power of community organizing.

Take Back the Corner - Hosted by Queer Students of Color

Add to Calendar3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Ever since September 23rd of 2015, it will be a day to remember for the DePauw community specifically for those identities targeted. As members of communities that are often marginalized, the Queer Students of Color organization would like to host an annual remembrance where we calm back our space and come together as a community to celebrate each other and erase all the hate that this society tries to feed us and spread love and awareness for each other. We would like to do that through a cookout that will be open for all DePauw members as well as together creating visual representation of ourselves and display them. This event will occur in Bowman park in the corners of Hannah and Locust streets. Free and open to the public.  #PreOrPostDDialogue

Add to Calendar5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Special advance screening at Ashley Square Cinemas of The Good Catholic, which was shot in Bloomington as well as stars Danny Glover, John C. McGinley, and Zachary Spicer. Spicer, who also co-produced the film, is a former Greencastle resident. Tickets for the genral public will be $10 and free admission for students with valid DePauw ID.

Synopsis: Daniel (Zachary Spicer) is a young, idealistic priest who loves his work more than anything. As he struggles to find balance between the dueling philosophies of his mentors, Father Victor (Danny Glover), an old school, no nonsense traditionalist, and Father Ollie (John C. McGinley), a chain smoking, carb-addicted Franciscan, Daniel’s passion for his calling never waivers. And then he meets Jane. After a chance encounter during a late night confession, the complicated and mysterious Jane (Wrenn Schmidt) starts to open up Daniel’s world to an entirely different set of possibilities. And problems. As new bonds form and old ones are tested, Daniel must decide what his true calling really is — and whether or not he has the courage to answer it.  #TalksAndArts
