COMMUNIVERSITY: “Spanish Music from Gran Canaria”

Add to Calendar6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Germán López, timple: “Spanish Music from Gran Canaria”

No passport needed to make your way to Music on the Square for an intimate evening with Germán López, master of the timple, the diminutive five-string instrument intrinsic to the music of the Canary Islands. Just close your eyes, leave lingering thoughts of winter behind and soak in two generations of sunny Spanish-influenced music and the epicurean art of Chef John Conrad as you’re transported to the island of Gran Canaria off the western coast of Africa. This sensory excursion offers two levels of seating:

Sit and Dine ($40/person): Doors open at 6 p.m. for a multi-course meal, including Pork Verde Tostadas, Estofado de Conje en Tomate (braised rabbit and tomato stew) and dessert, hand-crafted for the event by Wasser Brewing Company.

Music and Dessert ($15/person): Doors open at 7:15 p.m. for those wanting to enjoy a sweet evening of music and dessert.

“From there the music transitioned into the delicately rippling notes of the timple.... This was entrancing stuff, beautifully performed by Germán López.” — Michal Shapiro, Huffington Post

DePauw University Choirs

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Eric Schmidt, director and conductor

The DePauw Chamber Singers and University Chorus will embark on a choral journey around the world, highlighting secular songs from different countries or regions that all share the experience of changing borders and the question of national or cultural belonging. Melancholic Chinese folk tunes join moments of Basque and Irish cheerfulness. Celebrated Broadway hits soothe the gloom of Spanish poetry. And the lonely cowboy from the Wild West finally gets a chance to meet Hawai’ian beauty and South African energy. In addition to linguistic challenges, this geographic experiment will echo the theme of ever-changing borders by blurring the divisions between the two choirs.

Curious? Join us on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m.

General admission: $5

Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.

DePauw Jazz Ensemble

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Steve Snyder, director of jazz ensembles

Three arrangements by Bob Florence, originally created for the Phil Norman Tentet, are featured on this program of “Little Big Band” music. Norman’s group is one of the foremost modern exponents of this type of instrumentation, which has remained a part of the jazz idiom since as early as Jelly Roll Morton’s 1920s orchestra. Between these two groups are Marty Paich’s arrangements of Charlie Parker’s compositions, including Donna Lee, which uses similar instrumentation. With its emphasis on more intimate sound colors, small group dynamics and interaction, the Little Big Band format represents a unique ensemble challenge, distinct and yet related to its larger sibling, the Big Band, and to the smaller three- to six-piece Jazz Combo.

Exemplifying the latter on Sunday's program will be two pieces for three winds and rhythm section. Flamingo, which will be played as a ballad, is intended to evoke the recording by trumpeter Lee Morgan and organist Jimmy Smith. Alone Together takes the venerable standard through shifting time signatures and differing harmonic treatments.

General admission: $5

Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.
