Aikido

Add to Calendar11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself.

Kelly Writers Series presents: Robin Black

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Robin Black took a circuitous path to her literary career, spending her adult life until forty as a full-time work-at-home parent. When she started to write, she did so obsessively, getting her MFA at Warren Wilson at forty-three and publishing her first book, the story collection If I Loved You, I Would Tell You this, at forty-eight. Claire Messud has called Robin "a writer of great wisdom," and Karen Russell says of Robin's novel Life Drawing that is a "magnificent literary achievement." Her books of fiction have been translated into Italian, German, French, and Dutch, and been awarded numerous distinctions in the United States and overseas. Her latest, Crash Course: Essays from Where Writing and Life Collide, gives a glimpse into the years before she wrote, what kept her from doing so, what compelled her forward, and her day to day writing life, which includes advocating for people with learning disabilities, and for older emerging writers.

Free and open to the public.
