Vinyasa Flow Yoga

This is a flowing style of yoga where postures are linked in continuous movement. The longer class format allows us time for some breath work and meditative savasanas , cultivating awareness of yoga as a mental and spiritual, as well as physical practice . We move slowly to build strength and find the essential energetic core of each posture, always varying  sequences to focus the mind. We review correct alignment for those who are new to yoga, while we also move into some more challenging postures, always showing modifications.

Earth Week Speaker: Ian Cheney

Ian Cheney, filmmaker (King Corn, et. al) and co-founder of FoodCorps will deliver DePauw's Earth Week keynote. 

Ian Cheney is an Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker currently based in Maine. He grew up in New England and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale University. After graduate school, Ian co-created, co-produced and starred in the feature documentary KING CORN, which was released theatrically in 60 cities and awarded a George Foster Peabody Award. Ian subsequently directed the feature documentary THE GREENING OF SOUTHIE, which aired on The Sundance Channel and was featured in The New Yorker; TRUCK FARM, the story of urban agriculture in New York City, which aired on PBS; THE CITY DARK, a feature documentary about light pollution and the disappearing night, released theatrically and on PBS’ POV; THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO, a feature documentary about American Chinese food now available on Netflix; and BLUESPACE, which explores the terraforming of Mars and the waterways of New York City. His most recent film, THE SMOG OF THE SEA, is a collaboration with musician Jack Johnson. He is a co-founder of FoodCorps, a nationwide public service organization. In 2011 he and longtime collaborator Curt Ellis were awarded the prestigious Heinz Award for their work in sustainability. In 2014-2015, Ian was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. A visiting professor at the Università degli Studi di Science Gastronomic and a lecturer at Yale College, Ian travels frequently to show his films, lead workshops, and give talks about the human relationship to the natural world.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Club

BJJ has proven itself as the most effective self-defense system in existence. At DePauw, students, faculty, and staff can participate in the club. The club does not require any prior experience, so everyone is welcome. Classes are taught by instructors from Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy (IBJJA) which is one of the top mixed martial arts academies in the Midwest. "The goal of the IBJJA  is to promote athleticism, health, self-control, and discipline while providing the most advanced training for self-defense and sports competition."

The Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture Presents Jenna Fischer

Jenna Fischer, the two-time Screen Actors Guild Award-winner and Emmy-nominated actress, will be a guest of the Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture Series and will discuss her new book, The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide, her new ABC show Splitting Up Together, her recent experience working on Clint Eastwood's The 15:17 to Paris, and, of course, her role as Pam on the hit television comedy The Office.   The program will include a moderated conversation with Fischer, who will take questions from the audience. Afterward she will sign copies of her new book, The Actor’s Life, which will be available for purchase in the Great Hall of the Green Center.
