Claude Debussy ~ String Quartet in G Minor, Op.10

Gabriela Lena Frank ~ Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout

This is a free event; no ticket necessary.

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE

The Asbury String Quartet is the premier string chamber ensemble of the DePauw University School of Music. To be a member is an honor and each member receives a scholarship in exchange for their hard work and dedication to their music. The Quartet rehearses for six hours per week and is coached by Dr. Nicole Brockmann.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Claude Debussy's only work for string quartet showcases French Impressionist music at its finest with its search for "pleasure in the moment" through the composer's focus on the "supremacy of musical color over form and design," and serves as a bridge between traditional classical music and classical music in the 20th century.

"Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout for string quartet draws inspiration from the idea of mestizaje as envisioned by the Peruvian writer José María Arguedas," notes composer Gabriela Lena Frank, "where cultures can coexist without the subjugation of one by the other. As such, this piece mixes elements from the western classical and Andean folk music traditions."

Mozart's Requiem in D Minor

Orcenith Smith, music director and conductor

Eric Schmidt, director of choirs

The DePauw University Orchestra and Choirs complete the academic year with Mozart’s incomplete final work, the masterful Requiem in D Minor. Mozart finished eight of the 12 movements of the Requiem, and a student, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who assisted the ailing maestro with transcribing his ideas during his final days, brought the project to its completion. DePauw faculty soloists will be Jessica Usherwood, Caroline Smith, Kerry Jennings and André Campelo. Also included on Sunday’s program, illuminating and contrasting with the Mozart masterpiece, will be Eric Whitacre’s ethereal Lux Aurumque (Light and Gold) and movements from Hector Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust.

General admission: $5

Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.
