Documentary about red-beret-ed Jimmy Mirikitani, a feisty painter working and living on the street, near the World Trade Center, when 9/11 devastates the neighborhood. A nearby film editor, Linda Hattendorf, persuades elderly Jimmy to move in with her, while seeking a permanent home for him. The young woman delves into the California-born, Japan-raised artist's unique life which developed his resilient personality, and fuels his 2 main subjects: cats and internment camps. The editor films Jimmy's remarkable journey back into his incredible past. Co-sponsored by the DePauw Art and Art History Department.

Mendenhall Lecture

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Lecture: “The Heart and Soul of Democracy”

According to the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, we face a moral crisis in America. But it is not new. The divisions which have been exposed by culture wars and political battles over healthcare and immigration are deeply rooted in America's original sin. If we look closely at the long history of moral resistance and Reconstruction in America, we can see that a way forward has already been laid out: moral fusion organizing for a Third Reconstruction.

Following the lecture, Barber and Wilson-Hartgrove will be available to sign copies of their books.

DePauw Theatre: Trojan Women

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Euripides’ Trojan Women is the one of the greatest anti-war plays ever written.  It depicts the suffering of women and children after every war.  It has been used many times to protest against war and to act as a warning for audiences who see it.  It can also be a consolation for those who are suffering, because in it they see that over the ages, others too have suffered.  In our moment in time when war should be obsolete, it is a time filled with perpetual war, fueled by a hunger for power, and yet rather than spreading democracy, the tragedy of displacement, death, and destruction is spread and must be endured by those current victims of war, just like the Trojan women.  In contrast to the grief of the women, the barbarism of the so-called civilized Greeks is an indictment of all imperialists. Hence, the unfortunate relevance today of this story that was written over 2,000 years ago.

Ethics Writing Retreat

Add to Calendar8:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join the Prindle Institute and Prindle Post News Analysts for a day's worth of workshop-style courses on how to write about ethics in the news. Each session will have a slightly different spin: we'll have lectures on Law and Justics, Belief, and the Importance of Audience. This event is open to all DePauw students, and will provide networking opportunities to them as well as a valuable writing workshop.

There will be four sessions over the course of the day and each News Analyst will offer an hour-long lecture/workshop to interested students. To provide the most variety for students, the News Analysts will give their lecture four times, once per session, so students can divise their own schedule, or pick and choose certain lectures. We'll offer free lunch vouchers to any students who would like to join us for lunch. Visit prindleinstitute.org for more information!

Dark Sky Studies talk

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Dark Sky Studies:  An anthology and vision for an ancient and emerging field of studyDr. Daniel Mendoza ('01)Monday, April 15Olin Auditorium4:00 pmJulian-wide sponsorship by Computer Science, Physics, SRF(Dr. Mendoza's 2 majors & fellows program), plusEnvironmental Studies, Geosciences, Mathematics, Chemistry/BiochemistryDark Sky Studies is a truly interdisciplinary field engaging disciplines ranging from the humanities, urban planning, and tourism to STEM and health. The stars have served as navigational tools from the beginning of time and have also inspired writers and poets. As modernization and light pollution threatens dark skies, it is becoming increasingly urgent to understand the ramifications of their disappearance. Recent research has quantified the value of dark skies through metrics as diverse as the cost of lost astro tourism, health effects, and societal impacts. The Utah Legislature has committed to the preservation of dark skies and the state's largest utility company, Rocky Mountain Power, is in the process of including Dark Sky-friendly options to their Wattsmart energy-efficiency program. The confluence of these factors has led to accelerated progress in efforts to protect and restore dark skies both locally and worldwide.Dr. Mendoza will lead a team that recently received funded to start the first Dark Sky Studies minor. Starting July 2019, he will become the new director of the Consortium for Dark Sky Studies which is the first Dark Sky Studies research institute in the world. See Gloria Townsend (gct@depauw.edu), if you would like to meet individually with Dr. Mendoza throughout Monday or early Tuesday (April 15-16).  Dr. Mendoza also will co-lead a 2020 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Utah.
