Owners Seth and Bertha Holly play host to a makeshift family of people who come to stay, some for days, some longer, during the Great Migration of the 1910s when descendants of former slaves moved in large numbers from the South toward the industrial cities of the North, seeking new jobs, new lives and new beginnings.

Among those on the move are Herald Loomis and his young daughter, Zonia.  Haunted by the past, they are headed wherever the road takes them in search of the long gone Martha, Heralds's wife, and Zonia's mother.  Herald arrives at the boarding house unsettled, dark and secretive.  Seth Holly is suspicious and wants him out almost as soon as he arrives, but Bertha and the others see him differently, and by action and example, they help set him on the way to recovering his lost spirit and finding a new life.

Clown Workshop with Tony-Award finalist Kevin Coleman

Add to Calendar10:30 am – 12:30 pm

You do not have to be funny to attend!

Throughout history, the Clown has played a vital role in our shared humanity, as across all cultures, the clown has allowed us to laugh at those things that make us most human: our hopes, joys, fears, triumphs and failures. To be a clown - to know one's inner clown - is to be at our most honest and vulnerable.

This two-hour workshop is lead by Kevin Coleman, a founder of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA, and the director of its education program.  Kevin has years of experience as a teacher, director and an actor.  In 2016, he was a finalist for the Tony Award's Excellence in Education Award.

This workshop is open to all.

Aikido

Add to Calendar11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself.

Inspired by the nostalgic tenderness and fairy-tale magic of the music of Tchaikovsky, Medtner, and Rachmaninoff, the program is subtitled "Tales of the Old Grandmother." Each of the twelve pieces in Tchaikovsky's "Seasons" is prefaced by a poetic epigraph (poems to be projected during the performance) and represents a month of the calendar year. Medtner's Sonata-Reminiscenza and its longing for the innocence of youth and the Golden Age of Russian music provides a natural segue from the Tchaikovsky to the picturesque Etudes-Tableaux, op. 39, of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff's friend, the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi came up with descriptive titles for a number of these, and was able to obtain the composer's blessing for attaching them to these Studies-Pictures: the specificity of the images (also to be projected during the performance) is striking, and, while, not entirely absolutely necessary, they do provide a rich visual commentary to the music.

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Hosted by the Depts. of Geosciences and Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Jurdy will be presenting a lecture titled, "SETI--The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Perspectives of an Earth Scientist". Briefly--After 50 years of listening and searching for evidence for or from an alien intelligence has not led to a single creditable example. What are the possible explanations for "The Great Silence"? What is the "Rare Earth" hypothesis? The scientific, societal, religious and political impacts of an actual 'First Contact' scenario will be included. While discoveries of NASA's Kepler missions continues to provide numerous examples of possible life-hosting planetary systems, what observations would offer proof of life?

NASA's technology has revealed even greater surprises: water flows, a magnetized crust but an unknown interior. NASA's current InSight missions will be the first dedicated to study the Martian interiors with a seismometer, heatflow probe and magnetometer. This mission could establish the current temperature regime and crust and mantle structure, as well as size and state of martian core. #Speaker  #Science #WomeninScience  This event is free and open but seats are limited and an RSVP to marydonohue@depauw.edu by Friday, Feb. 9 is required to reserve a seat and have lunch.
