After interning at El Centro Autonomo in Chicago, DePauw student Paulette Parra ‘20 shares her experience of collaborating with an organization whose dynamics are not what the Hubbard Center prepares you for. El Centro Autónomo is as the name suggests, autonomous, meaning they do not rely on other organizations or the government for funding; instead, el Centro operates by community members, for community members, with the goal of enriching the overall community. Paulette discusses how these dynamics changed her perspective on community organizing and have resulted a bond that extends beyond her internship.

Aikido

Add to Calendar11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself.

Adrienne Russell, Mary Laird Wood Professor of Journalism and the Environment, Department of Communication at the University of Washington.

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 6:10 pm

In the digital era, mediated communication is changing fast and eating up ever greater shares of real-world power.  Journalism, rocked by change, remains one of the most contested sites of communication power, an expanded space where citizens, protesters, tech developers and hackers, along with political operatives, foreign meddlers, and software bots, directly shape the news.  While there is reason for alarm in the red-hot era of misinformation and so-called fake news, there is also evidence that a more robust journalism is being forged in the heat.  Adrienne will talk about her research on the contemporary confluence of journalism and activism, the ways reporters covering politics across media and genres have taken cues from activist communication and are liberating journalism from professional pracitces that have failed to reliably serve the public interest.  This event is free and open to the public.   #PulliamCtr #TalksAndArts

The Impact of (Some) Disabilities on Virtue and Well-being by Kevin Timpe

Add to Calendar4:15 pm – 5:45 pm

Kevin Timpe is Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College and President of 22 Advocacy, a non-profit advocacy group for children with disabilities. Dr. Timpe says, "It is common for people to think that being or becoming disabled would lead them to have a lower degree of well-being. However, empirical data suggests that this common view is mistaken. In contrast, many disability scholars argue that disability itself, apart from contingent social factors, does not undermine individual's well-being. I will argue that there is reason to think a middle view is correct." This talk is free and open to the public.  #TalksAndArts  #Prindle

This is Where We Are Now by Keah N. Brown

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Keah N. Brown is a journalist, freelance writer and the creator of "DisabledAndCute. Ms. Brown says "To be quite frank disabled people are tired. We are tired of not being seen and heard and we are done taking a backseat in the fight for proper representation. The time is now to speak up and out, to tell the world who we are and why that matters. Representations for people with disabilities are problematic and harmful not only to the disability community but the culture as a whole. This truth is self-evident but the gist is that we exclude people with disabilities from the important cultural conversations, the ones that influence how we see the world and what is reflected back to us, we are effectively creating a world of half-truths and encouraging the damaging idea that the only worth bodies are thin and non-disabled bodies. In order to avoid such fate, we must confront it. We have to talk about the areas where disabled people are being ignored and dismissed specifically with regard to representation in media in order to change the behavior. Disabled people are already doing great work with hashtags like #DisabledAndCute but the onus is also on the everyday consumer and person to demand the same change." This talk is free and open to the public.  #TalksAndArts  #Prindle
