Open Rehearsal: Ensemble Chartreuse

Add to Calendar11:35 am – 12:30 pm

Description:String trio Ensemble Chartreuse (Myra Hinrichs, violin; Carrie Frey, viola; Helen Newby, cello) visit DePauw on Nov. 1 for an open rehearsal of SoM Professor Eliza Brown’s Figure to Ground (2016). An open rehearsal invites audience members to observe and participate in the collaborative process between composer and performers. Chartreuse will present their interpretation of the piece, workshop it with the composer, then invite questions and discussion with the audience. As part of ArtsFest 2018, this event embodies the theme of “Art and Horizons” by existing in a space between rehearsal and performance, and between creation and interpretation of a musical work. Figure to Ground, based on a poem by Susan Stewart, deals with shifts in temporal perspective, life cycles and the inevitability of change. All are welcome to attend this free event.

Percussion and Saxophone Concert

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

A compelling reason for bringing DePauw School of Music’s percussion and saxophone studios together in concert is composer Stephen Lias’s “Mont Rainier Search and Rescue,” part of his National Park Series. Commissioned by XPlorium Ensemble, Lias’s highly personal work attempts to recapture the emotions, celebrate the heroism of the rescuers and honor those lost in unexpected disasters.

Individual performances by the two studios also will be featured on this concert. The DePauw Percussion Ensemble will perform Christopher Rouse’s “Ku-Ka-Ilimoku,” based on Hawaiian mythology, in addition to Yoshioka Takayoshi’s “Square Dance” and John Cage’s Story” for speaking percussionists. The saxophonists will present Marc Mellits’s “Revolution,” inspired by the composer’s visits to Romania. Written in four movements (“Groove Canon,” “Mara’s Toys,” “December 1989” and “Groove Machine”), the work embraces the idea of each voice working together to create a whole far better than just the sum of its parts.

No tickets needed to this free event.

Faculty Select Series: Kerry Jennings, tenor; Tarn Travers, violin; Amanda Hopson, piano

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 8:45 pm

DePauw faculty members Kerry Jennings, Tarn Travers and Amanda Hopson will present an evening of solo and chamber music. This contemplative program will feature the premiere of a new arrangement of composer Lori Laitman’s “Vedem Songs.” Originally scored for tenor, clarinet and piano, Ms. Laitman has re-scored the cycle for violin specifically for this program. Nestled in the middle of this cycle will be her song “Journey,” which she arranged for violin and piano from her original saxophone and piano version.

Rounding out the program are two short works for solo piano, the song cycle “Along the Field” by Ralph Vaughan Williams (for tenor and violin), and Richard Strauss’s poignant setting of the rapturous poem “Morgen: Und morgen wird die Sonne wieder scheinen” (Tomorrow: And tomorrow the sun will shine again).

Paintings by senior Christina Goetz, expressing the music and poetry of works being performed on this program, also will be on display.

General admission: $5; tickets for seniors, youth and all students: Free

DePauw University Choirs

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Eric Schmidt, director and conductor

For their fall concert, “Dichotomy,” the DePauw Choirs will perform pieces that present sharp contrasts, either in the composition itself or in constellation with another piece. From the righteous path to the nefarious, from death to the celebration of life – join the choirs on a journey of antipodes.

In the end, both groups will come together to perform Jake Runestad’s “We Can Mend the Sky,” based on poems of immigrant children whose parents escaped Somalia’s violent civil wars in hope of finding a peaceful future. The program will conclude with Craig Hella Johnson’s “All of Us” from “Considering Matthew Shepard.” Based on a brutal act of hate, this moving new work shines as an affirmation of hope as we all embrace the diversity around us.

General admission: $5; tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.

Tue Nov 13

Faculty Select Series: André Campelo, baritone, and Tony Weinstein, piano

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Faculty Select Series: Schubert’s Winterreise

“Winterreise,” which Schubert described as “a cycle of horrifying songs,” is a musical setting of a 24-poem monodrama by Wilhelm Müller (1794–1827). What at first looks like a sequence of laments uttered by a rejected lover, turns out to be a deep reflection about life and destiny. This “Winter Journey” captures the soul-searching experience and youthful transition from idealism to maturity and desperation of feelings associated with the discovery of one’s true vocation. At the crossroads, will the wanderer have the courage to relinquish the dream of a normal, tranquil family life and find strength to follow the solitary path of an artistic calling?

Join School of Music faculty members André Campelo and Tony Weinstein for this very personal evening of music-making Tuesday, Nov. 13, in DePauw’s newly renovated Thompson Recital Hall.

General admission: $5

Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.
