IU's School of Global and International Studies to Bear Names of Lee Hamilton '52 & Richard Lugar

October 7, 2018

"Indiana University says its School of Global and International Studies will now bear the names of former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton and former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees," reports the Associated Press. Hamilton, who served 34 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and has remained active in national affairs since his retirement from Congress, is a 1952 graduate of DePauw University.

IU President Michael McRobbie says school's name now will include "two of the most revered voices in foreign policy in the United States." An announcement calls Hamilton and Lugar "two immensely accomplished Indiana statesmen and two of the nation's most distinguished and influential voices in foreign policy."

The article notes, "Hamilton served in the U.S. House from 1965 to 1999 and chaired the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees. Lugar represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 2013 and chaired its Foreign Relations Committee. Hamilton and Lugar joined the School of Global and International Studies as distinguished scholars and professors in 2013. Hamilton also teaches in IU’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs."

Lee H. Hamilton majored in history at DePauw and was a standout on the basketball team, earning induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and DePauw's Athletic Hall of Fame.  A leading figure on foreign policy, intelligence, and national security, he has received many honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

Before his election to the Senate, Dick Lugar served on the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners and served two terms as mayor of Indianapolis. Today, the former senator is the president of The Lugar Center, a non-profit organization focusing on global food security, WMD non-proliferation, aid effectiveness, and bipartisan governance.

Both men have been regular visitors to the DePauw campus and have each presented Ubben Lectures -- Lugar in 2004 and Hamilton in 2011 -- and each has received the University's McNaughton Medal for Public Service as well as honorary doctorates from DePauw.  Lugar was the commencement speaker in 1972; Hamilton spoke to graduates at his alma mater in 1971 and 1998.

On February 15, 2018, the two leaders took part in a discussion at DePauw, "Can We Talk?: Restoring Civility in Public and Political Discourse in the U.S. and Abroad." Video of the program is embedded below.
