Katie Browning '18 is 2017's Miss Madison Regatta

Katie Browning, a rising senior at DePauw University, is the winner of the 2017 Miss Madison Regatta Scholarship Pageant. The winner of the competition represents the longtime tradition of Regatta boat races, which take place over Independence Day weekend on the Ohio River in Madison, Indiana, and receives the $2,500 Sarah Morgan Humanitarian Scholarship.

"At DePauw, Browning is the general manager of the University television station, vice president of public relations and marketing for Alpha Chi Omega and deejays for the school radio station," notes the Madison Courier. A communication and sociology major "Browning also works as an intern at the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce."

According to the newspaper, "Each contestant was given a nonprofit organization to research and present her findings. Each contestant also was asked to complete five volunteer hours with their respective nonprofits. For her presentation, Browning took the microphone from the podium and spoke, without the benefit of written notes, about Ruth Haven -- a residential program for women in recovery from alcohol or substance abuse. Browning told the story of a woman, 'Maxine,' whose life had been turned upside-down by methamphetamine use. Maxine’s ship was righted after completing her time at Ruth Haven, Browning said."
