More Than 70 DePauw Alumni Participate in Opening Day and Orientation Events

As faculty, staff and students reunite for another academic year, many events to welcome them and kick-off the year have involved another important group of DePauw community members -- alumni. Alumni speakers, presenters and mentors shared the importance of relationships with the DePauw community in various ways throughout the week.
- Justin Christian ’95 and Mike Smith ’70 helped DePauw faculty and staff members begin the academic year during Faculty and Staff Institute on Aug. 17 and 18. They shared the value of their DePauw experiences and the importance and strength of the DePauw alumni network. “Relationship building has been at the core of my career since I graduated in 1995,” Christian said. “It’s at the very core of what I do every day. My professors modeled behaviors for me that emphasized the importance of fostering relationships. These informal lessons were truly impactful on my life.”
- All first-year students participated in a GOLD dinner on Sunday, Aug. 20. Following a keynote speech by Nicole Burts ’13, 42 Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) spent time with students and gave advice about maximizing the DePauw experience. " Step out of your comfort zone, do things you would not imagine yourself doing, discover your authentic voice, listen to understand, not to respond," Burts said. "Be open and flexible to the ideas of others. See the world, help others, be compassionate. Volunteer because it is necessary not because it is noticed. Be engaged, be present, be resilient. This is the true essence of Tiger Pride."
- In addition, 32 alumni are participating as speakers and panelists in DePauw University's sixth annual Sophomore Institute on Aug. 21, including a keynote by Rhonesha Byng '11. The Institute is a professional conference-style event hosted by the Kathryn F. Hubbard Center for Student Engagement and supported by 1982 DePauw graduates Kenneth W. and Carrie Melind Coquillette. Sessions are designed to help students discover their strengths, balance their academics and activities, and better understand how to prepare for internship and job interviews. Additionally, students will work to develop goals specific to in-class and out-of-class experiences which will contribute to their future plans and success.
