March 30, 2013
Bloomington, Ill. - DePauw took third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan to eight innings in the opener before losing, 2-1, and then the Titans swept the twinbill with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
DePauw dropped to 4-12 on the season, while Illinois Wesleyan improved to 12-1.
In the opener, the teams battle through a scoreless five innings before DePauw's Linsey Button led off the top of the sixth with her third homer of the season.
The Titans came right back in the bottom half of the frame as Audra James led off with a single and scored on Keri Leach's triple.
The tiebeaker rule was invoked in the eighth and the Tigers loaded the bases, but couldn't push a run across the plate. In the bottom of the eighth, James was placed on second and moved to third on Leach's single. Allie Riordan then delivered a single up the middle that scored James and ended the game.
Button had three of DePauw's five hits, while Riordan had three of the Titans' 11 with Leach, Emma Clark and Kaity Crane each collecting two.
Emily Bichler dropped to 1-4 with the loss, while Molly McCready improved to 5-0 with an 11-strikeout performance.
The Tigers jumped out to a first-inning lead in the nightcap after Samantha Szyska reached by being hit by a pitch and moved to second on Amy Hallett's sacrifice bunt. Haleigh Chasteen delivered a double down the left field line to make it 1-0.
Riordan was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first and Clark followed with a two-run homer to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. Hannah Bowen's third-inning single plated Clark to extend the lead to 3-1.
Chasteen cut into the lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth, but Illinois Wesleyan added three in the bottom of the sixth. Sara Rogers hit a two-run homer before Courtney Martin doubled, stole third and scored on an error.
DePauw finished with five hits as Chasteen and Button each had two. Rogers led the Titans with two of their eight.
Kahla Nolan suffered the loss and dropped to 0-3, while Jenna Noland improved to 3-0.
The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, April 2, with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan.
