Tigers Sweep Big Red; Stay Unbeaten in NCAC Play

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw evened its overall record at 12-12 and improved to 8-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play following a doubleheader sweep of visiting Denison. The Tigers won the opener, 6-2, and took the nightcap, 2-0. The Big Red is now 12-10 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC.

In the opener, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first as Amy Hallett hit a pop up the dropped in short left field. The Big Red attempted to make a play at second but the throw was wide and allowed Hallett to come around to score.

Catherine Conte's homer to center in the bottom of the fourth made it 2-0 before the Tigers scored one more in the fifth. Jennifer Ridge reached on a bunt single and scored on Haleigh Chasteen's single.

The Tigers added four insurance runs in the sixth. Conte walked before Kate Hendrickson laid down a bunt and the Big Red attempted to throw out pinch-runner Gwen Anderson at second. The throw went into the outfield allowing Anderson to score and Hendrickson to move to second.

Jamie Story reached on an error by the center fielder which allowed Hendrickson to advance to third. Lauren Krumweide's bunt single plated pinch-runner Morgan Pigusch before Jennifer Ridge's bunt scored pinch-runner Kay Wood.

Denison's two runs came in the seventh as Jess Robertson led off with a single and moved to second when Grace Finkbiner reached on a walk. Both moved up a base on Kelly Cunningham's grounder and Rosie Glaser followed with a two-run single down the left field line.

Ridge, Chasteen and Conte each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Robertson and Glaser each had two of the Big Red's six hits.

Emily Bichler improved to 5-4, while Rebecca Dyer dropped to 6-5.

DePauw's Kahla Nolan took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the nightcap before allowing a single. Meanwhile, the Tigers scored one each in the second and fourth innings.

Linsey Button led off the second with a single to right and pinch-runner Samantha Szyska hmoved to second on Conte's sacrifice bunt. Krumweide knocked in Szyska with a single to left.

Hallett led off the fourth with a single and stole second. She moved to third on Chasteen's sacrifice bunt and scored on Szyska's infield single. 

Nolan kept Denison in check, allowing just one base runner beyond second base in tossing a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks to improve to 3-3. Kelsey Hager dropped to 6-4 with the loss.

Four different Tigers had one hit apiece, while Emily Lipsitz had the Big Red's lone hit.

DePauw hosts Franklin on Friday in a 4 p.m. twinbill.
