DePauw Advances to Midwest Challenge Title Game with Win over Illinois College

Greencastle, Ind.Top-ranked DePauw improved to 5-0 on the season and advanced to the title game of the Midwest Challenge following an 86-58 win over Illinois College. The Lady Blues dropped to 3-2 with the loss.

The Tigers face second-ranked Washington University in tomorrow's 4 p.m. championship game after the Bears topped Illinois Wesleyan, 80-63, in today's first game.

DePauw took a 22-9 lead midway through the first half before the Lady Blues cut the lead to 36-25 at the break. The Tigers knocked down six three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes including three from Emma Ondik.

Illinois College was still within 11 in the opening two minutes of the second half, but DePauw used a 20-7 run over a seven-minute stretch to push the margin to 24.

Ondik paced DePauw with 14 points and hit all five field goal tries including four from beyond the arc. Lauren Abendroth followed with 14, while Alex Gasaway and Alison Stephens each dropped in 12. Stephens snagged nine rebounds to lead DePauw to a 39-30 edge on the boards.

Hannah McGinnis and Brittney Burgess paced Illinois College with 15 points apiece with McGinnis grabbing nine rebounds.

The Tigers shot just under 51 percent for the game including 63 percent in the second half. DePauw knocked in 9-of-18 three-pointers in the win and outscored the guests from the line, 15-3. The Lady Blues shot 40 percent from the field for the game.

The win was DePauw's 39th straight overall and 58th consecutive regular season victory.

In the day's first game, Melissa Gilkey scored 22 to lead four Washington double-digit scorers. Alyssa Johanson followed with 13 with Kritin Anda and Maddy Scheppers each adding 11. Lexi Baltes led Illinois Wesleyan with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan led for the opening five minutes of the game, but the Bears put together a 17-1 run over a six-minute stretch and never trailed again.
