DePauw Jazz Ensemble Presents Year-End Concert Tuesday

April 21, 2019

The DePauw University Jazz Ensemble will take the stage in Moore Theatre one more time before the end of the School of Music’s 2018/19 concert season. The performance, directed by Professor Steve Snyder, will be given at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts, 605 S. College Avenue.

The music of five jazz pianists -- Bob Florence, Bill Evans, Joe Zawinul, Burt Bacharach and Bill Cunliffe -- arranged for the dectet format will be featured on the ensemble’s final concert with charts ranging from the angular hard bop of the early 1960s to the soulful and sophisticated music recorded by ’70s pop icon Dionne Warwick.

Saxophone a"This will be local jazz lovers’ last chance to hear two exceptional seniors play with the ensemble, saxophonist Lindsey Welp and trumpeter Andrew Bobker," said Snyder, who will lead the students in concert from the Hammond organ.

Lindsey, who will be going to graduate school at Bowing Green in the fall, will be featured on a Burt Bacharach piece, Alfie, and Andrew, who will be heading off to work this summer at Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine, will solo on Bob Florence’s Tell Your Story.

"Both have been outstanding students during their time here, participating in a significant way in all of the jazz classes, and they will be sorely missed," added Snyder, director of jazz studies at DePauw. "We congratulate them, along with all of the students in the band, for their continuing hard work this year."

General admission to Tuesday’s jazz concert is $5. Tickets for seniors, children and all students are free, thanks to season sponsors Judson and Joyce Green ('74 & '75).
