October 8, 2001
October 8, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - David A. Bohmer, director the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media at DePauw University and a 1969 graduate of this institution, is quoted in an Associated Press article that was published in a number of newspapers in mid-to-late September. The story, "Rural carriers compete for areas ignored by big players," received national distribution and was carried by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Oregonian and Prince George's Journal (Maryland).
The AP's Doug Simpson writes that government subsidies and a lack of competition have made rural phone companies big, yet quiet, money makers. "That's a nice security," the article quotes Bohmer as saying, describing him as "a DePauw University communications professor and a former executive at Centel, which merged with Sprint in 1993." It continues by again quoting Dr. Bohmer. who says of rural telecoms, "You know you're not going to lose customers to another company and you're not going to lose that revenue stream."Back
