DePauw Trustee Nick Chabraja Receives President's Cup for Tennis

October 26, 2001

October 26, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Nicholas D. Chabraja, chairman and CEO of General Dynamics and a member of DePauw University's Board of Trustees, will be presented with the President's Cup for Tennis at a dinner this evening, October 26, 2001 on the DePauw campus. The President's Cup for Tennis was established by the President of the University and the DePauw Alumni Tennis Association to recognize those who have provided critical leadership and support for tennis at DePauw.

Nick Chabraja was instrumental in helping DePauw turn the dream of a new indoor tennis and track center into reality. Using his private plane, he took DePauw's Athletic Director Page Cotton and (now former) Vice President of Finance Tom Dixon on a tour of similar facilities in other cities. In the end, the three men agreed, as DePauw President Robert G. Bottoms recalls, "on an L-shape, with one leg for tennis, and theInterior1a other for track, each with its unique surface. Nick actually sketched it out on a napkin and that became the plan. He continued to oversee the project, and made a significant gift to help finance it. The state of the art building that has few, if any peers among schools this size, is the result of his determination, dedication and generosity," Dr. Bottoms said.

Nick Chabraja has three children, all now DePauw alumni, who were standouts on the University's tennis team: Michael '89, Laura '91 and Nicole '97. Prior recipients of the President's Cup for Tennis include Charlie Erdmann in 1998, and Dr. Thomas Gordon in 1999.
