DePauw Band's Latest CD Reviewed in British Journal

January 25, 2002

January 25, 2002, Greencastle, Ind. - Winds, the Journal of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles, has published a positive review of the DePauw University Band's third CD, Airs & Dances. The publication is read throughout Great Britain, Europe, and Asia, as well as North America.

Volume sixteen, number two of Winds, published in summer 2001, states, "Of particular interest is a wonderful performance of James A. Beckel Jr.'s 'The Glass Bead Game.' This Concerto for French Horn and Orchestra was premiered by the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra in 1997 and transcribed by the composer for solo horn and band in 1999. It is an outstanding addition to the sparse repertoire for solo French Horn and wind band/ensemble. Richard Graef, assistant principal horn of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, is the stellar French Horn soloist on this recording."

James Beckel is adjunct professor of trombone at DePauw, while Richard Graef is adjunct assistant professor of horn. The performances on Airs & Dances were conducted by Craig Paré, director of University Bands and associate professor of music.
