Enjoy DePauw University Band's Concert Sunday Afternoon

September 18, 2002

September 18, 2002, Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw University Band, under the direction of Craig Paré, will present its first concert of the season this Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium of DePauw's Performing Arts Center. Presented in conjunction with Parents Weekend, the concert will include a wide variety of styles of band literature.

"The compositions on this program stretch to all corners of the band repertoire," states Dr. Paré, director of University Bands. "Each work represents a different style of music, from the traditional circus march by one of the icons of the march, Karl L. King, to the wonderfully-exciting program music heard in Eric Whitacre's depiction of a train in motion."

Aaron Copland' s Fanfare for the Common Man has become a staple of any brass ensemble's repertoire -- a heroic work that epitomizes the best and noblest in any American citizen. Amazing Grace, as well, is an easily identifiable and expressionful hymn tune, set for concert band by Frank Ticheli, a major composer of many genres of music. Suite Française, by Darius Milhaud, was composed soon after the end of World War II as a "thank you" to the many American and Allied armies who helped the French Resistance liberate France, and eventually all of Western Europe.

The University Band concert performance is free of charge and open to the public. To learn more, visit the Web site of the DePauw University Bands by clicking here.
