Incoming Freshman Wins Sportsmanship Award

June 8, 2003

June 8, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - "Jeff Zanchelli always has a complimentary word for his opponents, and he treats the game with respect," writes Dino Macro in the Lincolnshire Review of Illinois. Zanchelli, a Stevenson High School senior, is the co-winner of the Tom Pitchford Memorial Sportsmanship Award. The newspaper notes that the tennis player "will take his game to DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana next year."

"It means more to me than any accomplishment on the court," Zanchelli says of the award that is named in honor of the late Pitchford, who coached at Hersey. "I try to be a good sport on and off the court." Zanchelli's coach, Mark Linnenburger, says, "I've had the pleasure of coaching Jeff for four years. He's a real fiery competitor, but through it all he keeps what is important first. What he keeps first is team, family and friends."
