Bust of Former VP Dan Quayle '69 to be Installed in US Capitol Wednesday

September 8, 2003

September 8, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - A life-sized bust of Dan Quayle, America's 44th vice president and a 1969 graduate of DePauw University, "finally will be installed in the U.S. Capitol," notes the Indianapolis Star. "The white, Italian marble piece will be unveiled Wednesday, joining the busts of other vice presidents, whose job description includes the title of president of the Senate. Quayle, an Indiana native who was vice president from 1989 to 1993, first sat for the work about five years after leaving office, but the deaths of two artists delayed work on the piece."

New York sculptor Dan Sinclair, who completed the work, noted that "a figure with Quayle's boyish good looks is more of a challenge than someone like Abraham Lincoln with his 'craggy, almost grotesque features. This has more subtle features,' he said."

The story by Maureen Groppe adds, "The bust will be unveiled at an invitation-only ceremony in the Capitol attended by Quayle, his family, former President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and about 700 other guests. The bust will be placed near the Senate Reception Room and across from the bust of Bush, himself a former vice president. Because of security measures imposed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, visitors will have to be accompanied by a lawmaker or staffer to view the bust."
