March 15, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - "He's only been in Pocatello for five months, but KPVI Channel 6 weekend sports anchor and reporter Brad Shellgren has seen more than his share of local sporting events," begins an profile of the 1998 DePauw University graduate in the Idaho State Journal. "Whether it's ISU [Idaho State University] hoops or Century High soccer, Shellgren's often the man on the sidelines for the local NBC affiliate ... Not only does he report on sports, Shellgren, 28, is something of an athlete himself. At Chagrin Falls High School near Cleveland, he played point guard on the basketball team as well as running back and safety for the football team. He continued his football career at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he majored in communications."

Shellgren's KPVI biography states, "It was in college where he knew sports was the way to go for him. Since there isn't a big need for a 5'6" 150-pound running back who isn't really that fast, he knew the NFL was out. So he focused on broadcasting. He started by doing play-by-play for DePauw's basketball teams, and as a DJ for the campus radio station."
