Vernon Jordan '57 to Speak & Receive Honorary Degree at Penn State's Commencement

March 25, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - Vernon E. Jordan Jr., senior managing director for Lazard Frères & Co. LLC and a 1957 graduate of DePauw University, will speak and receive an honorary degree from Penn State University at commencement ceremonies, May 15, 2004. A news item on Penn State's Web site states, "A presidential adviser and prominent lawyer renowned for his leadership in the civil rights movement, Jordan ... previously served as the executive director of the United Negro College Fund and as president and as chief executive officer of the National Urban League."

It continues, "A graduate of DePauw University and the Howard University Law School, Jordan is active on a number of corporate boards, has received numerous public service awards and honors, and is the author of the best-selling memoir Vernon Can Read!. Jordan has been recognized with The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)'s Spingarn Medal, honoring his contributions to the cause of civil rights and social justice. In addition, he has received presidential appointments under the Johnson, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations."
