We must remain engaged" in the Middle East crisis, U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle, a 1969 DePauw University graduate, said at his alma mater today. Quayle spoke to more than 4,000 people in Neal Fieldhouse of DePauw's Lilly Center and was awarded the University's McNaughton Medal for Public Service.

Established in 1967, the year Secretary of the Navy-designate John McNaughton (DePauw 1942) and his wife and son were killed in a plane crash, the McNaughton Medal has been awarded four times before today. Previous recipients are: Percy L. Julian (DePauw 1920) in 1972; William D. Ruckelshaus, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1984; U.S. Representative and 1952 DePauw graduate Lee H. Hamilton in 1987; and Emory University President James T. Laney in 1990. (at right: Vice President Quayle with DePauw President Robert G. Bottoms after being presented the medal)
