Top-ranked Tigers headed back to NCAA Championships

Greencastle, Ind. - The top-ranked DePauw women's golf team has earned a berth into the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships to be held in Green Lake, Wis., May 11-14. The four-round tournament takes place at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia. The team invitation is the Tigers' third consecutive with a fourth place finish in 2002 and a third-place showing last year.


DePauw enters the Championships ranked first in Division III by Golfstat and are paced by the top-ranked individual, Jessica Schneider. Senior Deborah Garriott is making her fourth appearance in the national tournament as she earned a spot as an individual in 2001.


Schneider leads the team with a 76.59 stroke average and ranks 240th among all collegiate golfers. She won four tournaments this year and had 10 top-five finishes. Freshman Sarah Gates enters the Championships with a 79.18 average including medalist honors at last month's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Lake Lanier, Ga. Gates has six top-five finishes this season.


Garriott averages 80.0 strokes per round with one individual title and four top-five finishes. Gates, Garriott, Lisa Chambers, Lindsay Amore and Schneider swept all-SCAC first team honors by finishing first through fifth at the SCAC Championships. Schneider and Garriott were first team all-America selections in 2003 by the National Golf Coaches Association, while Amore was a second team selection.
