Barkley, chairman of the board of Bloomfield State Bank and 1952 graduate of DePauw University, is the 2004 recipient of the Harvey Hannah Memorial Award for community service presented annually by the Bloomfield, Indiana Chamber of Commerce. The Linton Daily Citizen reports, "The night belonged to Barkley. It was a night for the community to extend its hand and say thank you for everything that has been done to make Bloomfield a better place to live and raise a family."

Nick Schneider writes, "Barkley, who has been associated with Bloomfield State Bank since 1954, said he was 'highly dumbfounded' by receiving the award, and added, 'I appreciate it very much.' In making the award presentation, chamber president Randall Brown said to Barkley, 'Thank you, Stanley. Thank you Bloomfield State Bank. We appreciate everything you do for us, Bloomfield and the chamber of commerce.'"

The DePauw graduate noted, "We will continue to do everything we can do to support Bloomfield and the people in this community. Again I want to thank you all very, very much for this, what I consider a real worthwhile award that I hold dear."

The award is presented in memory of former Bloomfield High School teacher Harvey Hannah and includes a plaque and a $250 cash stipend. The newspaper states, "Carrying on the benevolent spirit that helped earn him the award, Barkley gave the check back to the chamber of commerce's treasury and matched it with a $250 donation of his own."

The story points out that Barkley "graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1947, and DePauw University in 1951. The award recipient also attended The United States Military Academy at West Point, graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and at Harvard University. Barkley was a commissioned officer in the US Army during the Korean War. He married the former Eleanor Thee ['53] in 1954... Barkley has been very active in many community and civic organizations, including the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Boy Scouts, Scottish Rite, Shrine Club, Mason, Greene County Landmarks Foundation and the Bloomfield Housing Authority. He formed the Retired Officers Association, the Sojourners, and the Council Navy League, all at the nearby Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division."

"Stan Barkley is an original. He is one of a kind," his friend, Judge Edward J. Najam of the Indiana Court of Appeals, says. "Stan has got a lot of mileage out of his economics degree. He's a serious student of the economy. His personal understanding of the financial markets have helped him build the Bloomfield State Bank from assets of $5 million to assets of $350 million today as chairman of the board. Stan has created and innovated and he's always thinking outside the box. I've learned a great deal from his practical insights and from his personal philosophies." Another friend, former NFL football player Carl Barzilauskas, added, "He deserves the award. All I know with speaking to him over all of the years I have known him is, he has always had Bloomfield in his heart and he was always thinking of better ways to help the community."
