Tigers open SCAC Tournament with loss to Millsaps

April 21, 2005, Conway, Ark. - DePauw opened the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a 16-7 loss to Millsaps. The Tigers now face Rose-Hulman which lost to Southwestern by a 13-6 score. The two teams meet on Friday at 10 a.m. at the University of Central Arkansas. The game will be carried by WGRE.

Millsaps jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a leadoff homer by Garner Wetzel and Ben Wilson's fielder's choice that scored Hunter Abrams.

DePauw took the lead in the bottom of the third as Chris Newman drew a two-out walk and scored on Ryan Sipe's double. A Millsaps error on Greg DeBeer's grounder allowed Sipe to score.

The Majors quickly responded with four in the fourth beginning with a two-run double by Sherwood Collette. Millsaps added another run on a DePauw error and the final score on a fielder's choice.

Millsaps sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth and scored nine runs to take a 15-3 advantage. The Tigers scored four in the bottom of the seventh on Sipe's RBI triple, DeBeer's run-scoring grounder and Kyle Dobbs infield single. The Majors added one in the ninth for the 16-7 final.

DePauw pounded out 16 hits with four each from Matt Deahl and Dobbs, while Sipe and Zach Harris each added a pair. Millsaps totaled 17 hits with Wetzel leading the way with four. Abrams and Collette each added three with Ryan Skertich and Wilson each collecting a pair.

Todd Kindler improved to 8-1 with the win, while P.J. Mitchell dropped to 6-3 with the loss.
