Diversity Inc., a magazine that specializes in covering diversity issues, has named Cummins Inc. as the top company for Asian Americans and one of the Notable Companies for Diversity.

"Our experience around the globe, and in China and India in particular, shows that diversity is good for business. And it's the right thing to do," adds Solso, a member of DePauw's Board of Trustees. Last month, Business Ethics magazine rated Cummins America's top corporate citizen for its efforts at decreasing engine emissions.

An article at Business Wire states, "Diversity Inc. selected the top companies by looking at the percentage of Asian Americans in the total workforce, in management, in the ranks of highest paid employees and among new hires. Cummins, a global company with its headquarters in Columbus, Ind., scored well in all areas. Cummins' experience shows how diversity is vital to the business. In 2004, Cummins had one of its most profitable years in its history with nearly half of the Company's business generated outside of the United States. Of the $8.4 billion in sales in 2004, 14 percent came from Asia. The phenomenal growth of China and India has turned them into two of Cummins' biggest markets, underscoring how important it is for the company to have employees whodiversity magazine may 2005.jpg understand its products and the culture where they're being sold. Helping to tap those markets are Cummins employees, who have been made to feel welcome by organizations such as the Cummins Chinese and South Asian Affinity Groups. The three-year-old Chinese Affinity Group, headed by Jean Hou, was formed not only to help recruit and retain Chinese employees, but to enhance business opportunities for the Company and to help communicate across the language and cultural barriers."
