orcenith smith.jpgOctober 8, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Orcenith Smith, director of orchestras at DePauw University, is conducting the Utah All-State Orchestra this weekend in Salt Lake City. The orchestra is composed of more than 120 students from all the high schools in Utah who were selected through a rigorous audition process.

Professor Smith has previously been selected to conduct the All-State Orchestras in Wisconsin, Illinois, Oklahoma, Kansas, Indiana and Vancouver, British Columbia. Smith's conducting of the Utah All-State Orchestra will be part of a program that includes the The Utah All-State Choir and All-State Band Saturday evening in McKay Arena on the campus of Utah Valley State.

Included on the program of music by Morton Gould and Gustav Holst is The American Dreamby DePauw faculty member, James Beckel. Beckel, principal trombone of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and trombone professor at DePauw, has had his works played by most major orchestras in the United States, including the Boston Pops. Smith chose the Beckel piece because "it is one of those noble and inspirational works that captures the student's imagination," he noted.
