Gill, Veatch earn SCAC honors

April 24, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw freshmen Rachel Gill and Katherine Veatch have been named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their performances in games from April 17-23.

gill030606.jpgGill finished 8-for-20 (.400) in the Tigers' six games last week with seven runs scored and nine RBI. She had four home runs during the weekend - her first of the season - with a pair in the both series opener against the Colonels as well as the series finale.

Gill slugged 1.000 for the week, hitting .462 in the four-game sweep of Centre that gave DePauw the Eastern Division top seed for this weekend's SCAC Tournament.

For the season, Gill is batting .376 (seventh in the SCAC) and slugging .667 (third in the SCAC). She has 27 runs (tied for 14th in the SCAC) with 29 runs driven in (tied for eighth in the SCAC). Gill has 11 doubles (tied for second in the SCAC) and the four home runs she hit this weekend ties her for third in the league.

veatch0306062.jpgVeatch was co-Pitcher of the Week with Rose-Hulman's Katie Maggard. She worked 19.0 innings last week, allowing 16 hits and just five earned runs (1.84 ERA) and posted a 3-0 mark in the circle. She struck out 27 batters and walked just three.

She was even more dominant in the her two appearances against Centre, winning both games while posting an ERA of 1.17 in 12.0 innings. Veatch allowed just nine hits and two earned runs while striking out 18 and walking two.

For the season, Veatch is 11-1 (fourth in the SCAC in wins) with an ERA of 2.77 (eighth in the SCAC). She has struck out 82 batters (fourth in the SCAC) in 78.1 innings (10th in the SCAC) and opponents are batting just .237 (fourth in the SCAC) against her.

DePauw hosts Transylvania on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and opens SCAC Tournament play at Sewanee on Friday when they face the winner of the Millsaps vs. Rose-Hulman game at 1 p.m. CDT.
