President Bottoms Discusses Birmingham-Southern's Entry to SCAC

Dr. Bottoms.jpgJune 13, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - A story in the Birmingham News detailing the vote to add Birmingham-Southern College to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference includes remarks from DePauw University President Robert G. Bottoms. "From our perspective, we would like very much for Birmingham-Southern to come into our conference," Dr. Bottoms tells the newspaper. The article notes that Bottoms is president of DePauw and chairman of the SCAC Board of Directors, and that he is "himself a Birmingham native who graduated from BSC and Phillips High School."

Bottoms and the other SCAC directors heard from Birmingham-Southern President David Pollick at their meeting in Atlanta last week. "We told him the invitation is yours as soon as you get permission from the NCAA. In the presentation Dr. Pollick made, hetold us they were planning to add football and it certainly enhanced their attractiveness."scaclogo.jpg

Perrin writes that Birmingham-Southern's "four-year transition from NCAA Division I to non-scholarship Division III will begin June 1, 2007, if it is approved by the NCAA later this month."
